Tattoo lettering styles: the six families, measured

Tattoo lettering splits into six families: script, blackletter, handwriting, Roman capitals, old school display and fine line. What separates them on skin is not mood but the width of their thinnest stroke. Measured across the 24 typefaces in our lettering tool, that stroke ranges from 1.8 to 6.7 percent of cap height.

This page covers the families, the measurements behind them and the cases where no typeface will do. Which face suits your own word is a comparison better made by looking, and how large to set it is a decision your artist makes at the placement.

The six families of tattoo lettering

The six families are six different answers to one question: how much a letter is allowed to change width along its own stroke. That variation is measurable, so the table below reports it from the exact font files the tattoo font generator serves, rather than from adjectives.

The method is stated in full so the numbers can be rechecked. Each face was rendered with its capital H exactly 1,000 pixels tall and thresholded to solid black. Every ink pixel was then scored by the shortest uninterrupted run of ink through it in four directions, which approximates the local thickness of the stroke it sits in. The thinnest and thickest figures are the 5th and 95th percentiles of that distribution, so a stroke tapering to a point cannot set the number on its own.

Two rows in that table run against the usual advice. Blackletter, the family people associate with weight, has the widest spread of anything here: 3.3 percent at its thinnest and 21.1 at its thickest across the four faces in the group. And fine line, the family named after thinness, is not the thinnest group. The narrowest strokes in the whole set belong to two formal scripts, Pinyon Script and Tangerine, at 1.8 percent of cap height each.

Stroke contrast is what separates the families on skin

Stroke contrast is the ratio between a letter’s thickest and thinnest stroke, and it predicts how a style changes as a tattoo settles better than the style label does. Across the measured set it runs from 1.4 in Poiret One, a geometric face whose line barely varies, to 4.9 in Pinyon Script, a formal copperplate. Roman capitals hold the tightest band of any family, 2.3 to 2.6 across all three faces.

The reason contrast matters is arithmetic rather than aesthetic. If a spreading line gained the same absolute width everywhere — the simplest assumption, and one nobody has measured on skin — a 2 mm stem would gain a few percent of its width while a 0.4 mm hairline alongside it would gain half again. The letter does not thicken; it changes shape, because its two strokes move at different relative rates.

Everything above is the geometry of an outline, not the behavior of ink. These numbers describe what goes into a stencil, measured from font files that anyone can download and remeasure. They do not describe what a tattoo looks like after ten years, and no number on this page was taken from skin.

What tattoo fonts age well, and why thin ones do not

Faces with little stroke contrast age most predictably, and the measured set puts three at the flat end: Poiret One at 1.4 to 1, Sacramento at 1.6 and Caveat at 1.9. A flat face thickens evenly as ink spreads, so the shape survives even when the size does not. A high-contrast face loses the strokes that gave it its character while keeping the ones that did not. The same trade sits behind imagery as well as words, ranked by detail load in tattoo styles that age well.

No standard sets a minimum stroke width for tattoos. The nearest quantified threshold in any field is the ADA Standards for Accessible Design, which require the stroke of the uppercase I on a visual sign to be between 10 and 30 percent of the character height, and 15 percent at most where characters are raised to be read by touch — the full rule is set out in the US Access Board guide to signs.

Measured on the uppercase I, 7 of the 24 faces reach the 10 percent floor that signage requires. The eight script faces run 4.4 to 6.7 percent — two thirds of it at best.

A sign is read down a corridor and a tattoo is read across a table, so the band is a benchmark rather than a rule, and nothing in the ADA applies to skin. It is still the only place anyone has put a number on how thin a stroke may be before a letter stops working, and the lettering people ask for most sits a long way below it.

How small lettering goes before it blurs

No published figure sets a minimum size for tattoo lettering, and the research on why tattoos persist at all does not supply one either. The 2018 study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine that established the mechanism — pigment held by dermal macrophages which capture, release and recapture it as those cells are replaced — explains persistence rather than spread, and reports no figure for how far a line widens.

What can be checked is the instrument that draws the line. By the gauge tables tattoo suppliers publish, a #12 needle is 0.35 mm in diameter and a #10 is 0.30 mm, which gives the stroke widths in the table something physical to sit against.

Turn that arithmetic around and it gives a floor for each face. Pinyon Script has to be set about 33 mm tall before its hairline is as wide as a single #12 needle; Great Vibes needs about 22 mm, Poiret One about 12 mm, and UnifrakturCook about 6 mm. Those are not recommendations. They are the heights below which the thinnest stroke in a face is narrower than the instrument drawing it, and what an artist does about that — thickening the hairlines, dropping the face, refusing the size — is their call at the placement, not a number a website can hand out.

Old English is a typeface, not a language

Old English in a tattoo shop names a typeface, not the medieval language of the same name, and the typeface is recent. Microsoft’s own listing for Old English Text MT credits the drawing to the Monotype Type Drawing Office with data dated 1990 to 1992, says little is known of the face’s history, and separates two things most tattoo guides merge: German Frakturs and English blackletters are different traditions with different letterforms.

The blackletter in our own tool is on the German side of that split. Google Fonts describes UnifrakturMaguntia as based on Peter Wiegel’s Berthold Mainzer Fraktur, itself based on a 1901 typeface by Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt. Its documented lineage begins in 1901, in Germany, which is a more interesting fact than the medieval story usually attached to it and has the advantage of being checkable.

One family in the set does have an ancient model, and it is not the gothic one. Cinzel is described by its publisher as inspired by first century Roman inscriptions and built on classical proportions. Letters cut with a chisel had no reason to carry hairlines, and the measurement follows the story. Forum, the lightest of the three Roman faces, is one of the seven that clear the signage floor on the uppercase I, which no script in the set comes near.

Chicano, graffiti and the styles no font can give you

Chicano lettering, graffiti and freehand script are not typefaces, and no tool on this site can produce them. They are hand lettering, drawn for one word at one size on one body, where the spacing, the slant and the flourishes are decided per letter rather than carried in a file. Of the 24 faces in our tool, not one comes from that tradition — which is worth stating plainly, because lists that put Chicano next to Times New Roman are describing two different kinds of object.

The same limit applies to one person’s handwriting. A face that looks handwritten is not the handwriting of your grandmother, and nothing in a font picker gets closer to it than a scan of the original note does. Matching a style to a name, a date or a quote

The content of the lettering constrains the family more than taste does, because length and stroke width pull against each other at a fixed placement.

A single name

A name is read as a shape before it is read as a word, so the family choice is mostly a choice about how much variation you can afford. A placement gives you a width rather than a height: ten letters in the space of five means letters roughly half as tall, and every millimeter figure in the table above halves with them. A long name is therefore the case where the copperplate row of that table starts to matter: same face, same placement, half the hairline.

A date or a set of numerals

Dates are the case where the measurements make the choice nearly for you. Roman capitals carry the inscription model that Roman numerals came from, and the notation has traps of its own, set out in Roman numeral tattoo rules. The typewriter face here, Special Elite, holds the sturdiest thin stroke of all 24 at 6.7 percent of cap height, which is a measurable reason to reach for it when a date has to be set small. A date can also be set as code, not digits, and there the thing that has to survive is spacing rather than stroke, which is what the Morse code tattoo generator is built around.

A quote or a full sentence

Quotes are the hardest case, because every extra word makes the letters smaller at the same placement and small letters punish thin strokes first. A sentence in a high-contrast script is the combination that fails soonest; a monoline script, a handwriting face or a lighter Roman face gives the same feeling with more margin. Breaking a long quote into two or three lines buys height back, which does more for legibility than changing the typeface does.

Compare the six families on your own word

Stroke contrast is quicker to see than to read about, and a name is the only test that matters, since letter combinations differ. Type the word, drop the preview size to the bottom of its range, and the faces that stop working are the ones whose thin strokes were carrying the design.

Questions people ask

Do script tattoos blur?
Script lettering carries the widest gap between thick and thin strokes of any family measured here, up to 4.9 to 1, and thin strokes are what close up first as a tattoo settles. Blurring is not inevitable across the category, though. A monoline script such as Sacramento measures 1.6 to 1, close to a handwriting face, so the risk belongs to the copperplate and high-contrast faces rather than to cursive as a whole.
How do you prevent tattoo lettering from fading?
Fading and blurring are two different problems, and only one of them is decided when the lettering style is chosen. Pigment loss over years is a skin and aftercare question that belongs to the artist's instructions. Line spread is a design question, and a face whose thinnest stroke is a larger share of the letter height has more margin before the shape changes. That is why the measurements here are of stroke width rather than of color.
What font is used for tattoos?
No typeface is manufactured specifically for tattooing, and artists work from ordinary typefaces plus hand lettering that is not type at all. What matters when a file leaves a website is the license. The 24 faces in the Inkantic lettering tool are published under the SIL Open Font License, which permits commercial use, so a stencil made from one can be tattooed for money.
When is a lettering style the wrong place to start?
Lettering styles are the wrong starting point for any word outside the Latin alphabet. The 24 faces here load Latin subsets only, so Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic, Greek or Chinese text falls back to a system font or renders as empty boxes. A malformed character in a script you cannot read is the one tattoo mistake nobody in the room can catch, so those words go to an artist or a native writer instead of a font picker.
